Ioanna, Athanasia and Zoe are beneficiaries of the program "New Agriculture for a New Generation", who attended the "Summer School" training program implemented by the Agricultural University of Athens. The three sisters together with their mother and uncle, manage the family farm “Karra-Mandraki” with 1,200 free range goats in Ellinokastro, Trikala.
Since they were young, they had already decided that they would be working at the family farm, but they first wanted to have the appropriate studies that would enable them to contribute to the development and modernization of their family business. Thus, Ioanna studied economics at the University of Piraeus and then graduated from the Dairy School of Ioannina. Zoe is a chemical engineer specialized in food, and Athanasia is an electrical engineer with a specialization in engines and energy.
Ioanna says: "We want to follow a path of knowledge, collaboration and technology. The Summer School showed us the way, giving us useful ideas and tools that we have now started applying to our family business in order to modernize it."
It is in their immediate plans to open their own cheese dairy and to demonstrate the quality characteristics of their products which come from the methods of farming and the flora of the region. They have also placed GPS devices on their animals to track their routes.
The knowledge they gained from the program urged them to start networking and to search for collaborations with other farmers of the region. This way they were able to convey the values of cooperation and networking promoted by "New Agriculture for a New Generation" program to the people of their area.
